mashup monday

The awesomeness of this mashup will make up for posting it a day late. This one features Lil' Wayne (FREE WEEZY) vs. The Office. This odd mashup, seemingly destined for failure, is actually nicely done and — dare I say — pretty hot.

Thanks for the find, Mr. (other) Carter.

Lil' Wayne, Tha Carter 2004

It's been difficult to find good music videos to go along with the throwbacks, but this one is so good it doesn't even need hot girls grindin' on caddies.

big momma

If you're not familiar with this strange brew, it is kombucha. Kombucha, or "bacteria water" as my friends lovingly refer to it, is a fermented mushroom drink that is not nearly as scary as it sounds. Read more of me babbling about my love of it here. (you should read it; I was a better blogger then.)

Anyways, you know I could preach the benefits and my love of Kombucha alllll day long, so don't listen to me — listen to The New York Times, who featured an article on kombucha in today's paper.

"NAOMI MOST, a devoted brewer of a fermented tea called kombucha, keeps her “big momma” in the garage. The big momma in question is a 20-pound pancake of gelatinous and, well, rather gross-looking bacteria and yeast floating atop a vat of kombucha, a drink that enthusiasts tout as a tonic for digestion, hair loss and all manner of bodily ailments..."

ew. awesome.

snail or monkey tail?

MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design has acquired the @ symbol into its collection. sweet. so do you think it resembles a snail, monkey tail, sleeping cat, pig tail or pug tail? (guess which one I added...)

Bone Thugs n Harmony, Resurrection (Paper, Paper) 2000

The first time I heard BTNH I was at a party in the basement of my friend's house. We were drinking fruit punch and playing some pathetic middle school interpretation of truth or dare to the soothing sounds of "Crossroads."

Fast forward seven years later. I'm still in a basement. Still drinking some variation on fruit punch. But, this time, something is different...

a sexy, post-baby Adriana. can you find her?

leave the foam at home

Marcel Vigneron, the almost Top Chef we all love to hate (or in my case, love to LOVE), is back! Everyone's favorite molecular gastronomist is starring in a new avant-garde cooking show, called "Marcel's Quantum Kitchen" on the SyFy network. In each episode, Marcel and his new catering and event company will be hired by a demanding client to produce an extraordinary celebration or event. Based on client requests, Marcel will dream up a theme and cuisine for each event; ranging from fairy-tale graduation party and a Goth-rock fashion show, to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new subway line.

While the premise is far from earth-shattering in its conception, the show sounds like a solid hour of entertainment each week.

I have only two requests, Marcel: MORE HAIR GEL, LESS FOAM.

why I want to live in Florence

nowhere else would denim on mismatched denim and a graphic blazer look so...right. love the unexpected splash of purple.

leather and gold

Most people know that I purchase cameras based mostly on aesthetics (stupid. stupid. stupid. I know.) However, Lomo's latest camera combines high-quality functionality with high-class design that will please even the pickiest novice or professional. The LC-A+ limited edition camera is gilded in 24-carat gold, wrapped in the softest, aged brown leather and is a real looker (try not to blind those around you when you unearth it from its case.) And for all you REAL photographers out there, it also features the original Russian Minitar lens for trademark eye-popping colors and shadowy vignettes.

Good luck getting your hands on this gold — there are only 130 available.

broken bells

Broken Bells' James Mercer, of the Shins, and Danger Mouse (love) face a pre-teen focus group, searching for pass/fail feedback on the first single from their self-titled album, which is amazing if you haven't heard it. Oh James, your voice is so hauntingly sexy.

I was also impressed by the band's SWEET homepage animation.

free weezy

Although Lil' Wayne won't be heading to jail YET, he did leave fans with his most emotional, and might I add most coherent, tweet to date.

"Yesterday i smiled, today i smirked, tomorrow i stop ... Thanks for you thoughts and pareyers, they're needed. The F is for family, friends, and fans.........thank u.........your love and prayers are felt. They kant lok up my heart bekuz y'all already have it on lok. ..........thank u."

Happy to have your heart on lok, Weezy... oh wait, I mean ....................

well (RED)

Penguin has done it again. Another tasteful redesign of eight classics, this time based around the AIDS awareness fund (aka RED). The traditional black band has been replaced by red, with a typographic interpretation of a quote from each book acting as the visual hit. The covers range from beautiful (the script on that Zola cover is GORGeous) to powerful — ie: The Dracula cover quote:

"His eyes were positively blazing. The red light in them was lurid, as if the flames of hell fire blazed behind them."

Holy ish man. A good cause plus typographic rendering of a few powerful words and I want to read again.

hot plate

mmmmm. very excited to make these chicken cutlets with lemon parmesan arugula salad tonight, a la this recipe. these cutlets have been rotated regularly on my cooking schedule, and even PICKY BOY loves this meal. There's just something about the spicy greens, salty parm and tart lemon against the warm, crispy chicken that makes this super delicious.

peep this

I'm going to go ahead and take a WILD guess and assume the March weather probably won't be able to make up its mind much in the next few weeks. In steps Raya: a versatile new booty from Acne for the chilly, warm, wet and sunshiny days to come...plus, a little much-needed toe nudity.

(better Lollipop those tootsies!)

this dapper dude reminded me how much I love me some good ol' fashioned menswear.

mashup monday

In honor of Canada unfortunately not sucking at everything, today's mashup comes from Tor, a Montreal-based producer, who sampled Sufjan Stevens' album "Come on Feel the Illinoise" into the mixtape "Illinoize." Clearly the motto is "add a z and everything'z cooler." The album is nothing to write home about (probably because Sufjan's original was sooo goood,) with the exception of this hot jam.
